The Archivo Portal is an archive complex dedicated to the influential Mexican architect Luis Barragan. The site of the complex takes place in Parque Lira, a large park nestled into the dense urban fabric of Mexico City. Archivo Portal is comprised of three main structures that are situated along the commemorative Frida Khalo entrance pathway. The structures are nestled into the natural topography of the park, cutting into the valley on either side of the pathway. The three massings are united by a large curved concrete wall that envelops the structures. This curved concrete wall only has openings along its paths guiding visitors to explore the rest of the park. The concrete wall encloses a tranquil environment protecting the complex from city noise and creates a sense of privacy.
The painted concrete screen also amplifies the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape and fauna by painting the concrete Mexican pink, inspired by Mathias Goeritz's masterful control of color while painting Barragan's projects. Archivo Portal is a complex where visitors and scholars can learn more about Barragan's influence and work while experiencing similar topics of peace and serenity.
